Whether you are a military truck driver or simply want to show your support for those who have served, here is an opportunity for you. Each December, Wreaths Across America makes sure veterans are never forgotten. The organization arranges wreath-laying ceremonies for cemeteries and memorials across the nation. As a truck driver in New England, you have the chance to drive for the Wreaths Across America convoy.
National Wreaths Across America Day
Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit that depends on the volunteerism of individuals to carry out its mission for National Wreaths Across America Day on December 15, 2018. There were more than 700,000 memorial wreaths that were laid in 2014 on this day.
The organization will coordinate more than 1,400 wreath-laying ceremonies. This includes placing wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery along with other major military cemeteries in other countries. To be able to carry out this mission, the organization depends on rolling ambassadors.
Joining the Convoy as a Rolling Ambassador
To be fortunate enough to join the fleet of rolling ambassadors in delivering the wreaths for these ceremonies, you must sign up as a volunteer. You will need to provide basic information about your equipment, licensing, and trucking insurance to ensure your eligibility.
While there is a waiting list for the Arlington National Cemetery convoy, you can request to volunteer for any cemetery you want. Keep in mind, the headquarters is located in Columbia Falls, Maine. Truck drivers in Maine who can pick up wreaths at the headquarters location are wanted. The convoy from Harrington, Maine to the cemetery in Arlington comprises the largest veterans’ parade in the world.
What to Expect on the Convoy
The way the convoy works is you drive your own tractor and dry van trailer, or that of your employer, which is loaded up with live balsam wreaths. These wreaths are delivered to one or more cemetery stops depending on your availability. Along with carrying wreaths, you are representing the Wreaths Across America organization and its mission—to remember, honor, and teach.
In addition to the wreath-laying ceremonies, Wreaths Across America also coordinates with local VA hospitals to host events all year long. If you are unable to drive in the convoy, you can also support the association by sponsoring a live wreath that will be delivered on National Wreaths Across America Day.
One wreath sponsorship is $15 while the most popular sponsorship is five wreaths for $75. You can sponsor a wreath in honor and memory of someone, or sponsor a pair of wreaths that includes a wreath given to a loved one.
