The ATA recently released its “American Trucking Trends 2019” report, reflecting 2018 trucking industry numbers. Here are the key takeaways:
*Last year proved to be a strong year for trucking with revenue increasing 12.2% year-over-year to $796.7 billion (nearly $100 billion more over 2017) and accounting for 80.3% of freight spending in the country! (1)
*Trucks were responsible for moving 71.4% of tonnage in the USA (11.49 billion tons). (1)
*Surface freight between the USA and Canada increased 3.6% last year and Mexico cross-border increased 10.2%. (1)
*The number of people employed by the trucking industry in 2018 jumped to 7.8 million, 100,000 more than 2017. This includes 3.5 million drivers (6.6% women and 40.4% minorities). (1)
*“91.3% of fleets operate six or fewer trucks and 97.4% operate 20 or fewer.” (1)
*By the end of 2018, the industry was short 60,800 drivers, marking a new high and increasing close to 20% over 2017. (2)
Drivers remain a top concern for the industry in 2019, with driver turnover increasing at a faster rate than the previous year. Recent data provided by Stay Metrics shows that the number of drivers that stayed at a company for 30 days decreased from 86.3% (polling drivers from March-May 2018) to 84.9% (March-May 2019). Taking it a step further, those drivers staying at a company a minimum of three months decreased nearly 5% from 69.3% to 64.9%. (3)
